And breathe…
Hi, it’s Claire Kimball here, founder of The Squiz. We’ve wrapped up Squiz Today for 2025, but I’m jumping in to say thanks for coming along with us this year.
Whether you’ve recently become a Squizer or you’ve been Squizing since the very beginning, we don’t take the privilege of having a place in your inbox for granted. As information sources splinter across all the channels we have available to us these days, we’re honoured that you spend time with us.
Not gonna lie - it’s been a challenging news year... I’ve been working around news for coming up to 30 years now (eek…), and it was almost 10 years ago that I chucked in my corporate job to give this crazy idea of The Squiz a try.
The thing that struck me about 2025 was how many heavy stories had to be covered, but there wasn’t a lot of resolving of big issues. And then, of course, as we ended the year, the terror attack on Bondi Beach was just so shocking and sad.
As you know, we like to inform but not overwhelm, and a balanced news diet is key. The standout story of the year for me on the ‘cause-for-optimism’ side of the ledger was the report that Australia is on track to become the first country in the world to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health issue by 2035. We’ve got to keep vaccination and screening efforts up, but it’s an incredible achievement.
Who knows what 2026 will bring, but I can guarantee that the team will be on hand with our agenda-free, engaging newsletters and podcasts to fulfil our promise to be your friend in news.
Just on the team - thanks to our news director Andrew Williams, along with Alice Dempster, Larissa Huntington, Nicoletta Hay and Gillian Bradford for their loving stewardship of the Squiz Today newsletter this year. They care a lot about bringing you the best news updates possible, and a better/smarter gang you will never find.
And thanks to our commercial partners for their trust in us to deliver their messages to you. Because our products are free, our world doesn’t work without their support, and we’re grateful to the brands - big and small - that have jumped onboard.
Before I sign off (and find a quiet place to lie down…) - a quick ask. If you love/like/moderately regard The Squiz as a good place to get news, tell your people about us. They can head to thesquiz.com.au right now to sign up for free. Pretty good, right?
Stay safe - merry Chrissy/happy new year. And may you feel the (roast potato) love over the break.
Go well, Claire
