Thanks for the year that was - and a request...

As the end of the year trundles towards us, I just wanted to say thank you for another great year of Squizing. And there’s something I wanted to ask you…

Help us keep you informed but not overwhelmed…

Are we there yet? 2024 has been epic for news - we weren’t short of things to chat with you about, that’s for sure…

And for us, there’s been one cloud that’s hung around - how the federal government would resolve the question of getting the social media and search companies to pay Australian publishers for the news content on their sites.

Today, we got a steer on that after an impasse was reached with Meta in February when it refused to stump up.

Long story short, The Squiz continues to wade through tricky operating conditions - and it’s unlikely to get easier any time soon.

Despite all of that, we’re proud of how we live the mission of giving you a shortcut to being informed each and every day. Our whole purpose is to help you out with an easy way to keep up with the news. Hopefully, we’ve given you a better understanding of complex stories and better connections with the people around you through great conversations about what’s happening in the world.

We’re also proud of how we’re helping the next generation to develop the skills they need to become critical consumers of news and information. This year, our Squiz Kids Newshounds media literacy program took it up a notch - and I strongly encourage you to check it out if you have primary school-age kids.

So, to the ask… If you value what we do, I hope you’ll consider doing one or all of these things to help us out.

  1. Copy and paste this link and post it to your social media and recommend to your people that they subscribe to our Squiz Today newsletter. (And yes, I get the irony if that’s on Facebook or Instagram. Or why not send it to your WhatsApp group chats - aka another Meta business?)

  2. Follow our Squiz Today and News Club podcast shows. And tell the podcast listeners in your life who want an easy way of staying in touch with the news that they are shows they should try.

  3. Send this link to your email contact list. Wondering what to say? Try something like this:

I reckon you should check out The Squiz - they send a weekday newsletter that’s a shortcut to being informed. It’s a fact-filled run-down of what's making news, and there’s always a quirky news story or 2 to lighten the mood. They’re independent and committed to agenda-free news, so they’ll never tell you what to think. Have a read of their latest edition here and make sure you subscribe.’

Or for something short ‘n sweet:

Hey, the Squiz is awesome. Sign up to their newsletter.’

We reckon 2025 is the year to ‘be informed - not overwhelmed’. We also think you’ll know some people who will appreciate finding a news provider taking that approach in what will be another big year, so please send them our way. The future of The Squiz depends on it.

We still have another week of Squizing to come, but I’ll take the opportunity to wish you a Have a great Chrissy and new year. I can’t wait to talk to you in 2025.

Go well,
Claire Kimball
