Squiz Sayings
"Sometimes supportive boyfriend duties call. But you know who I'm rooting for to take the Cup."
Said former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau about his decision to skip watching his country kick off their World Cup campaign to attend the USA’s first match, where his girlfriend Katy Perry was performing. It’s a case of dates before (country)mates…
Steps towards peace with Iran
The Squiz
What do you get for the person who has everything? Turns out a diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East is a birthday present fit for a US President… After months of will-they-won’t-they talks, the US says it’s signed a ceasefire deal with Iran, ahead of an official ceremony on Friday in Switzerland. Both US President Donald Trump and Iran have claimed victory, but this isn’t an all-inclusive peace deal - it’s more like a first stage, before a(nother) 60-day pause in fighting while the 2 sides discuss what needs to happen to achieve a permanent end to the war.
So what happens next?
We still don’t know exactly what’s in the agreement, but Trump says the details will be released “pretty soon.” He says ships are “starting to move” through the key shipping route in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz - which many world leaders have welcomed because of the vast impact that closure has had on the global economy via higher fuel prices. Iranian state media is reporting what it says are the draft details of a 14-point framework, including releasing billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets (Iran's economy was struggling before the war, and the US naval blockade of its ports have exacerbated the impact of sanctions…) in exchange for Iran saying it won't build a nuclear weapon, with the details to be thrashed out in the next 60 days.
And what about the Israel-Lebanon front?
Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif, who’s been involved in negotiations, says the agreement also calls for the fighting between Israel and Lebanon to end, but analysts reckon this could be a tall order… While these talks have been happening, Israel and Hezbollah - the terror organisation backed by Iran - continued striking one another, threatening to derail the whole diplomatic process and landing Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu in Trump’s bad books. Analysts say Israel isn’t going to be involved in the 60 days of negotiations, while Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz says that IDF troops won’t withdraw from Lebanon. So it’s TBC how this plays out…
Helping people who need it most
International conflicts, disasters and disease outbreaks are in the news every day, leaving millions of people without access to urgent medical care. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF or Doctors Without Borders…) provides impartial, lifesaving healthcare to people, regardless of nationality, religion, or political views. Their teams give more than 16 million consultations each year, with hospitals in war zones, helping women give birth in refugee camps and managing deadly outbreaks. You can learn more about their work - and help them with it - here.
Squiz the Rest
The markets liked what they heard…
News that the Iran-US deal is on track saw stock markets rally and oil prices fall yesterday, but analysts say it could be a long wait until the official signing ceremony on Friday, with days of uncertainty and volatility for oil prices… And in Oz, the Albanese Government is under pressure to extend measures to help with higher fuel prices. You might recall the halving of fuel excise in April, but that’s set to end on 30 June. PM Anthony Albanese says that even if the US-Iran deal is signed, it’ll take months for things to return to normal - so he’ll make a decision on extending the rebate next week. Some economists reckon all this won’t have much of an impact on the Reserve Bank’s interest rate decision later today. Spoiler alert: the hot money is on rates remaining on hold at 4.35%.
Now for the next peace deal…
Fresh off his UFC/birthday high, President Trump has arrived in the Alpine town of Évian in France for the annual Group of 7 (aka G7) summit - and to widen our war talk, bringing Russia’s war with Ukraine to an end is a top agenda item. Peace talks led by the US have taken a back seat since the war with Iran began, but reports say Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with Trump on the G7 sidelines to get the ball rolling again. Trump’s fellow G7 leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the UK will be there, and while there’s a lot on the table to discuss, analysts say he’ll want their support to keep the Strait of Hormuz open under the terms of the peace deal with Iran (see above…).
Not playing games
After forcing tech giants to account for harmful content on their platforms, Australia is pushing them to tackle crime targeting young people online. Working with the Five Eyes Law Enforcement Group, Federal Police and intelligence officials are meeting with companies to discuss the threat of “tech-enabled crime”. They haven’t said which companies, but it comes after the AFP logged 82,764 reports of online child exploitation and 1,325 reports of sextortion in 2024-25. AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett says kids aged 14-16yo are most at risk of being exploited or radicalised, with offenders using AI chatbots in gaming platforms/chat groups on targets. She says tackling the problem is “beyond the ability” of police alone and that “responsible tech companies can be the digital penicillin of our time”.
Putting a new obsession to bed - for now…
Bringing a rip-roaring weekend of North American sport to a close, the Carolina Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup yesterday - ice hockey’s biggest prize. Considered by many as the hardest trophy in sports to win because of the long/physical season, the Canes wore down the Vegas Golden Knights over the best-of-7 series, winning their first championship in 20 years. The breakout star is Carolina goalie Brandon Bussi. Throughout the playoffs, Frederik Andersen was the guy in goal - but a performance wobble after the shock death of his manager/former NHL great Claude Lemieux saw him benched midway through the series. Bussi - who hadn’t played a game for nearly 2 months - stepped in and had a blinder. For our part, we’re happy to put ice hockey down for a bit after becoming a little obsessed for a moment there…

From strictly singing to strictly dancing
Aussie singer Delta Goodrem has been announced as the latest to join the 2026 season of the UK reality show Strictly Come Dancing. The show is a Dancing with the Stars (with a slightly more posh title) style competition, and is one of the biggest shows on UK TV… Goodrem most recently came fourth, repping Oz at Eurovision, delivering our second-best result there. No stranger to reality TV, she coached on The Voice Australia for 8 seasons between 2012 and 2020. She’s the third contestant to be announced for this year’s season of the UK show, joining English actor Lacey Turner and reality TV star Dani Dyer. Filming kicks off in September, and if she can dance half as well as she can sing, we reckon she’ll eclipse the competition…
Apropos of Nothing
US whey protein producers are struggling to keep up, as demand for protein-boosted everything keeps rising. US exports have dropped, to keep supply at home. We wonder how many grams of protein are in reading the Squiz… Probably a lot.
Tyra Banks, host of America’s Next Top Model, has filed a lawsuit against Netflix for defamation over its documentary about the show. She says that the creators cut down 3 hours of interviews to construct a false narrative. She might say that’s not fierce…
And a new lightweight UFC Champion has been crowned at the White House with American Justin Gaethje beating the previously undefeated Ilia Topuria at the UFC Freedom250. It was an unexpected win and perhaps fitting for an unexpected event…
